Hungarian River
The Danube is the second-longest river in Europe (the Volga is the longest). It is the longest river of the European Union. The river is 2,860 km (1,777 mi) long. Brigach and Breg join together in Donaueschingen (near the Black Forest) to "make" the Danube. The Danube flows through or makes part of the border of 10 countries: Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. The river ends in the Black Sea through the Danube Delta.
Bigger cities include Ulm, Regensburg in Germany; Linz, Vienna in Austria; Bratislava in Slovakia, Budapest in Hungary; Novi Sad and Belgrade in Serbia.
The Danube is named in many other languages: Esperanto Danubo, Bulgarian Дунав (Dunav), German and Plattduutsch Donau, Greek Dounavis, Ancient Greek: Ister, Hungarian Duna, Turkish Tuna, Latin Danuvius or Danubius, Romanian Dunare, Serbian and Croatian Dunav, Slovak Dunaj, Ukrainian Dunay.
The Danube is an important waterway. Ocean ships can go up to Braila in Romania. River boats can go Kehlheim in Bavaria. Smaller ships can go up to Ulm.
There are three artificial waterways built on the Danube: the Danube-Tisa-Danube Canal (DTD) in the Banat and Backa regions (Vojvodina, in the northern province of Serbia); the 64 km Danube-Black Sea Canal, between Cernavoda and Constanta (Romania) finished in 1984, shortens the distance to the Black Sea by 400 km; the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal (about 171 km), finished in 1992, linking the North Sea to the Black Sea.

HUNGARIAN RIVERS
Hungary has two large rivers, which are running in many countries. The river Duna and Tisza. The Tisza is crossing the Duna, down outside of Hungary, somewhere in Yugoslavia. The two rivers are separating the country into 3 large parts. a.) The part east to the river Tisza! b.) The part between the river Duna and Tisza! c.) The part west to the river Duna! In geography lessons it is taught the same way. The part which is west to the river Duna, was Roman province and was called Pannonia. In this part of the area modern people were living by the influence of the Roman empire. As in the east part of the country barbarian tribes were doing no good. Because of this the west side of Hungary is more developed than the east. Scientists are debating if the rivers are keeping together the country or are they still seperating it more and more. I might say, that the rivers hold together other countries too, and only one of them is ours.
THE RIVER TISZA
The Tisza is an international river, because it is running in many countries, like in the Ukran, Jugoslavia, and Bohemia. Altough it is kept as our longest river. Many years ago it was longer than now because it had more bends than an angy snake. These bends were 1420 km long alltogether. But they were cut off from the river itself, and this short version is still long enough to be longer than any other river in Hungary. Because of this lenghts naturally there are flooded towns and villages in some parts of the river. Large dams were ordered to be built at both sides of the river, this dambuilding operation was given to every city council and village area organisation. The work lasted until the year1890. The river Tisza has water suporting area of 157200 km2. Many ships use the river to lary their cargo. In Hungary the river is 585 km long. end
THE CHANNEL - SIO
The channel itself leads the needles water away from the largest lake of Middle Europe, the Balaton. It leads into the river Duna. The first channel was made by the Roman Emperor Galerius in 292 B.C. Today we have channels built in 1941-'47. It is 120,8 km long. It was a hard work to build it, but it is used for a good goal. It's usually 3,5 and 5,5 meters deep, so its good for ships too.
THE VENETIEN LAKE
This is the third largest lake in the country. The lake is 25 km2 large. It is usually 1,5 m deep. In summer it is 22-24oC warm. It is a well cleaned lake, which is ideal for swimming, for children and for their parents too. The lake is a protected area.
THE RIVER RABA
The Raba is the largest river of West Hungary. It collects the waters from the alps and supports the river Duna with it. If more rain and snow falls in Hungary the river is 211 long.
THE LAKE BALATON
Or as we call it: "The Hungarian sea". It is the largest lake in Middle Europe. It is 593 km 2 big and 77 kms long around. And it is 6 kms wide; it is usually 3,14 ms deep. Its deepest part is called the "Tihanyi Well". It is 10,5 ms deep. The north coast is getting deeper fast. This is one of the reasons why the tourists love the south coast. In nice weather and hot summers, there are some competitions, to swim across the lake Balaton. Fishermen say that these things are the best ways to catch a lot of fish. Because fish laugh to death of thousands of people swimming across the lake, which they do every day.
